STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS ASSOCIATION OF VIRGINIA

2021 Virginia Building Code

24 Mar 2024 7:37 AM | Anonymous

The 2021 Virginia Construction Codes took effect on January 18, 2024. Refer to https://www.dhcd.virginia.gov/codes for additional information.

One important note for structural engineers: the 2021 VCC references ASCE 7-22. This update was made primarily to incorporate the tornado design provisions which have been introduced in 7-22.

The codes hosted online by ICC currently do not reflect this change. Virginia is working with ICC to get this updated. The official state regulations are found at the Department of Housing and Community Development: https://www.dhcd.virginia.gov/building-and-fire-regulations-archives

DHCD is also working to identify any other updates needed for 2021 VCC to correlate to 7-22.

Sorry I missed this when I presented info on ASCE 7-22 at the ASCE/SEI/VFPM technical seminar earlier this month!
Reading the VCC Chapter 35 amendments to IBC 2018 any VCC reference to ASCE 7 means ASCE 7-22 and not ASCE 7-16. Could be more than a few of those "other updates" that are needed. The "new" snow load for Tidewater may attract some attention as we go from ASD ~15 psf to LRFD ~35 psf.
