Course Description:

In this seminar attendees will learn about the various ways buildings interact with the environment. The relationships between resilient design, sustainable design and the base building code will be explored. Examples of masonry buildings resilient to natural hazards will be provided. Environmental product selection information will be reviewed. The embodied carbon of masonry products will be examined along with suggestions to reduce the carbon footprint of buildings constructed with masonry.

• Explain the various ways buildings interact with the environment
• Explain the concept of resilient building design and how it relates to sustainability, environmental impacts, and the building code
• Describe the inherent attributes and advantages of masonry construction for resilient design that lessen impacts on the environment
• Evaluate the use of EPDs and LCA analysis in the building product selection process
• Understand the basics of embodied carbon of masonry construction
